By now, we’ve all heard the news that George Santos was finally expelled from Congress on Friday. This is a huge victory for New York 3rd District residents, who are finally free from a lying lawmaker who cheated the system to pad his own pockets, and for everyone who values integrity and democracy in this country.

And it’s no coincidence that just last Tuesday, days before Congress would vote to expel Santos, MoveOn flew a 15-foot George Santos inflatable balloon in front of the Capitol, with a tie that said “full of lies.” The goal of the balloon was to demonstrate grassroots opposition to George Santos in a key, high-stakes moment and to bring national attention to the demand for Congress to expel him immediately. And that’s exactly what happened.

More than 100 media outlets mentioned MoveOn’s balloon in light of the House vote to expel George Santos. As reported by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Washingtonian, People magazine, and more, MoveOn capitalized on the spectacle around Santos to further damage his reputation and raise the stakes surrounding his expulsion. We even reached more than 50 broadcast and radio stations—from Kansas to Santos’s own backyard in New York—making it clear across the country that Santos has no place in Congress.

George Santos is just the sixth House member to ever be expelled from Congress, which required two-thirds of Congress to approve. His expulsion came a few weeks after the House Ethics Committee released a report revealing the myriad of laws he broke, including illegal usage of campaign donations for luxury vacations, spas, Botox, and more. The scathing report concluded that “Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.”

Constituents from Santos’s district, NY-03, have been relentlessly rallying, lobbying, and advocating for Congress to hold Santos accountable for his lies and fraud. For nearly a year, they had no meaningful representation in Congress.

MoveOn got involved in the fight to oust Santos early in 2023, just a few weeks after the news broke about the lies he told about his religion, education, and other personal information to get elected. In February, dozens of NY-03 MoveOn members and partners delivered a petition to his Long Island office, with 100,000 signatures demanding George Santos resign or be expelled. And just a few weeks later, MoveOn planned a “Drive Santos Out” constituent caravan with partners that made its way through the district and received TV, radio, and newspaper coverage across the region to demonstrate constituent opposition.

Before this most recent vote, Congress had voted twice on whether to expel Santos from Congress and failed both times. Even this time, after being charged with 23 indictments and the damning House Ethics Committee report, GOP leadership still voted to keep Santos in Congress.

Santos escaped accountability for far too long, with protection from his MAGA colleagues, who kept him in office so they could hold on to their majority and power in Congress. But ultimately, we won. And will we keep winning when we come together to demand justice and accountability for those who serve themselves instead of the people they are supposed to represent.

With this week marking the anniversary of the disastrous Dobbs decision, we wanted to share new research which documents the abortion stances of every Complicit Caucus member. Since last year, support for abortion rights has grown, even and especially in red states, which puts the Complicit Caucus’s collective stance on abortion even further out of step with a vast majority of Americans. 

Despite running as moderates, the entire Complicit Caucus positions itself among the extreme right on abortion. The latest “Bought and Paid For” video highlights a segment on Fox News from June 12 where Fox News broadcast a bottom-of-the-screen chyron that accused President Joe Biden of being a “wannabe dictator who arrested his political rival.” This segment ran the same day as Donald Trump was indicted in Florida on 37 federal charges related to his willful retention of secrets and other military classified documents in violation of federal law. 

Several media outlets and observers took Fox to task for the reckless broadcasting of misinformation and propaganda. Despite the outcry, corporate advertisers like AT&T, Subway, and GM continue to support Fox News’ misinformation through financial support and advertising. 

“Another week and another example of Fox News broadcasting propaganda and misinformation to mislead its viewers. Accusing President Biden of being a ‘wannabe dictator’ with its on-screen chyron is unhinged and a misuse of its platform,” said MoveOn Campaign Director Kelsey Herbert. “This type of casual Fox News misuse of the airwaves is bankrolled by corporate advertisers like AT&T, Subway, and General Motors that fund this type of disinformation and extreme rhetoric on a regular basis. We continue our call for those corporations to stop funding Fox and stop enabling its pollution of the public airwaves.”

Pressure is building on these companies to cut their ties to Fox News in the wake of the humiliating Dominion lawsuit exposing the network’s fraudulent coverage. Recent polling found that two-thirds of Americans believe Fox News divides Americans and puts a political agenda and profits ahead of getting the story right.  

“Bought and Paid For” escalates the latest wave of Stop Funding Fox campaigning by MoveOn to discourage any current or prospective companies from advertising on—and therefore subsidizing—the right-wing propaganda outlet. In mid-May, MoveOn members staged a series of actions against Fox News and its advertisers. The group held actions and sponsored mobile billboards outside of Subway, AT&T, and GM’s respective headquarters, as well as an action in New York City to protest Fox’s upfront presentation the media company held to lure in advertisers. In concert with the actions, MoveOn also released a digital ad targeted to Subway, GM, and AT&T customers to shame the companies for funding and fueling Fox News’ dangerous lies.

After months of MAGA Republicans’ holding our economy hostage, the Biden administration and Congress have finally reached a deal to raise the debt ceiling, prevent a national default, and preserve critical federal programs. The budget deal that President Biden secured isn’t perfect, but it protects jobs, veterans’ benefits, historic climate change investments enacted in 2022, and lifesaving health care benefits, while mostly preserving the social safety net.

Together, MoveOn members’ activism stopped Republicans in Congress from dragging all of us into a catastrophic default and prevented MAGA Republicans from gutting the social and economic progress MoveOn members have fought for over the last two years. We turned up the pressure on vulnerable House Republicans in swing districts through rallies, floods of calls to their office phone lines, and ads calling out their complicity in upholding the MAGA agenda. An analysis of key votes from the first five months of the 118th Congress shows that the 18 House Republicans from swing districts Biden carried in 2020 have voted in lockstep with Marjorie Taylor Greene. “While these House members pass themselves off as moderates to their constituents and the media, they are in fact pushing the MAGA agenda in Washington,” said MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting. “They are the Complicit Caucus, voting with the radical right wing and causing real damage to our families, our communities, and our country.”

Voting Record

MoveOn’s analysis focused on 62 key votes the 118th Congress took on House governance (leadership, rules, committees) and on final passage legislation that deeply divided the chamber. Voting behavior not included in this analysis includes procedural votes (motions to recommit, suspend the rules, or adjourn; ordering the previous question; quorum), votes on amendments, and votes on legislation that passed with sweeping bipartisan support, such as The PRC is Not a Developing Country Act. 

A review of these 62 key votes finds that the 18 House Republicans from swing districts that Biden carried in 2022 voted 100% with ultra-MAGA Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene on 37 of them (see chart below). Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick from southeastern Pennsylvania broke from Rep. Greene and the rest of the swing district Republicans three times, and Rep. Mike Lawler from the Westchester suburbs of New York broke from Rep. Greene and the rest of the swing district Republicans once. 

• All 18 swing district House members sided with Rep. Greene to elect Kevin McCarthy speaker, despite the numerous concessions he made to the radical right wing of the Republican party.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to gut the House ethics rules and let corrupt congressional colleagues go unchecked. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to slash funding for the IRS and allow wealthy tax cheats to go undetected. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to set up a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government in order to launch a shameless January 6 counter investigation. It‘s an idea that MTG convinced Speaker McCarthy of in order to “tell the other side of the story.“ 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene for a pair of anti-abortion measures.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to allow more drilling on public lands.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene on four bills to undermine COVID protections. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole Republican to vote against a fifth COVID bill aimed at ending COVID telework options for federal workers.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to overturn the criminal justice reform and voting rights measures passed by the democratically elected D.C. City Council.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a baseless and bigoted vote that was political retribution for Reps. Greene and Paul Gosar being removed from committees for inciting violence against Democrats. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to block investment plan managers from taking into account environmental and social factors in their investment decisions. 
• 16 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to block the Biden administration from applying the Clean Water Act to wetlands and other waterways. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole Republican vote against this resolution. Arizona Rep. David Schweikert did not vote. 
• 17 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to further enable far-right groups pushing for book bans and harmful new restrictions on transgender students. Rep. Lawler voted against this bill, along with four other Republicans.  
• 17 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to pass a sweeping energy package that would undo virtually all of the climate change legislation Democrats passed last year. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole House Republican to vote against this legislation.
• 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to set forth the rule for consideration of a bill to amend the Education Amendments of 1972 to provide that for purposes of determining compliance with Title IX of such Act in athletics, sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.

“Tucker Carlson may be gone, but Fox News’ heinous coverage and dangerous lies continue,” said MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting. “A Fox News segment condoning and cheerleading inappropriate sexual relationships between teachers and underage students should be the final straw for any respectable advertisers. AT&T, Subway, and General Motors need to drop ties with Fox immediately or go on the record to explain why they’re comfortable with such toxic programming. Pressure is building on these companies to quit their ties to Fox News in the wake of the humiliating Dominion lawsuit exposing the network’s fraudulent coverage. Recent polling found that two-thirds of Americans believe Fox News divides Americans and puts a political agenda and profits ahead of getting the story right.  

“Bought and Paid For” escalates the latest wave of Stop Funding Fox campaigning by MoveOn to discourage any current or prospective companies from advertising on—and therefore subsidizing—the right-wing propaganda outlet. In mid-May, MoveOn members staged a series of actions against Fox News and its advertisers. The group held actions and sponsored mobile billboards outside of Subway, AT&T, and GM’s respective headquarters, as well as an action in New York City to protest Fox’s upfront presentation the media company held to lure in advertisers. In concert with the actions, MoveOn also released a digital ad targeted to Subway, GM, and AT&T customers to shame the companies for funding and fueling Fox News’ dangerous lies.

We all know that this event comes mere weeks after Fox News agreed to the largest lawsuit settlement in U.S. media history and fired Tucker Carlson. Together, we made sure that Fox’s potential advertisers don’t forget that that is the same brand they are being asked to fund.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what advertisers saw on Monday:

MoveOn members protested outside Fox’s New York City event, demanding all advertisers stop funding Fox! We also rallied, delivered our petition, and launched mobile billboards at corporate headquarters of select advertisers. Our message was clear: Every dollar given to Fox News funds the hate and conspiracy theories they blast on air.

And that’s not all. If in-person events weren’t enough, we made sure these name-brand corporations currently funding Fox with their ads heard from MoveOn members online, as well. Thousands of MoveOn members took to the social media accounts of AT&T, GM, and Subway to ask them to stop funding Fox, and MoveOn released an online ad, contrasting these brands with some of the bonkers claims Fox News personalities make, showing that Tucker Carlson’s firing doesn’t change the rot at the core of this propaganda machine.

But since private correspondence from Fox News hosts was made public in late February, we’ve turned up the heat and created sustained pressure on Fox News and its funders. Because of members like you, we’ve been able to put pressure on cable providers and advertisers to stop future deals with Fox.

• Nearly 60,000 members demanded that AT&T, Subway, and General Motors stop funding Fox, via petitions which were delivered this week.

• Made thousands of calls to Comcast, Cox, and Spectrum, who are likely in negotiations with Fox News right now and considering raising the “Fox tax” on every cable bill.
• Left thousands of comments and reactions on the social media feeds of AT&T, GM, and Subway.
• Launched a digital ad calling out AT&T, GM, and Subway for funding Fox. 
• And more!

It can be easy to doubt that our actions add up to much in the face of the incredible power and wealth of a mega-corporation like Fox. But all of this collective outrage is having a real impact! According to a poll released this week, two-thirds of Americans agree that Fox “News” is really propaganda, intent on putting its political agenda and profits ahead of getting the story right. And Fox News’ ad revenue is expected to go down by over 8% in 2023. So we can’t give up, even as Fox tries to project stability and confidence.

The only way to shut down Fox News’ dangerous lies is to expose those who are financially enabling them with revenue, through cable news carrier fees and advertising support. MoveOn will continue holding Fox News accountable and demand that corporations #StopFundingFox!

Kicking off the program is the release of a new analysis of key votes from the first 100 days of the 118th Congress, which shows that the 18 House Republicans from swing districts Biden carried in 2020 have voted in lockstep with Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“While these House members try to pass themselves off as moderates to their constituents and the media, they are in fact enabling and pushing the MAGA agenda in Washington,” said MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting. “They are the Complicit Caucus, voting with the radical right wing and causing real damage to our families, communities, and country.”

Voting Record

MoveOn’s analysis focused on 36 key votes the 118th Congress took on House governance (leadership, rules, committees) and on final passage legislation that deeply divided the chamber. Voting behavior not included in this analysis includes procedural votes (motions to recommit, suspend the rules, or adjourn; ordering the previous question; quorum), votes on amendments, and votes on legislation that passed with sweeping bipartisan support, such as The PRC is Not a Developing Country Act. 

A review of these 36 key votes finds that the 18 House Republicans from swing districts that Biden carried in 2022 voted 100% with ultra-MAGA Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene on 32 of them (see chart below). Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick from southeastern Pennsylvania broke from Rep. Greene and the rest of the swing district Republicans three times, and Rep. Mike Lawler from the Westchester suburbs of New York broke from Rep. Greene and the rest of the swing district Republicans once. 

• All 18 swing district House members sided with Rep. Greene to elect Kevin McCarthy speaker, despite the numerous concessions he made to the radical right wing of the Republican party.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to gut the House ethics rules and let corrupt congressional colleagues go unchecked. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to slash funding for the IRS and allow wealthy tax cheats to go undetected.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to set up a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government in order to launch a shameless January 6 counter investigation. It’s an idea that MTG convinced Speaker McCarthy of in order to “tell the other side of the story.”
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene for a pair of anti-abortion measures.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to allow more drilling on public lands.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene on four bills to undermine COVID protections. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole Republican to vote against a fifth COVID bill aimed at ending COVID telework options for federal workers. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to overturn the criminal justice reform and voting rights measures passed by the democratically elected D.C. City Council.
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a baseless and bigoted vote that was political retribution for Reps. Greene and Paul Gosar being removed from committees for inciting violence against Democrats. 
• All 18 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to block investment plan managers from taking into account environmental and social factors in their investment decisions. 
• 16 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to block the Biden administration from applying the Clean Water Act to wetlands and other waterways. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole Republican vote against this resolution. Arizona Rep. David Schweikert did not vote. 
• 17 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to further enable far-right groups pushing for book bans and harmful new restrictions on transgender students. Rep. Lawler voted against this bill, along with four other Republicans.  
• 17 swing district House members voted with Rep. Greene to pass a sweeping energy package that would undo virtually all of the climate change legislation Democrats passed last year. Rep. Fitzpatrick was the sole House Republican to vote against this legislation.

“With a felony indictment in New York, another indictment looming in Georgia, and two impeachments to his name, Donald Trump does not belong on any ballot for public office. After years of avoiding any liability for his actions, Trump is finally being held accountable for his criminal conduct. This isn’t a trivial matter: Trump defrauded voters ahead of the 2016 election by illegally concealing critical information that should have been in the public record and then breaking the law again in covering up his crime. 

“Furthermore, Trump should never be allowed to have a platform again. With his long history of spreading disinformation, spewing hateful, racist, and misogynistic rhetoric, and subverting the will of the people, the former MAGA president maliciously exploits any platform to which he has access. His calls for protests to defend his criminal acts are a thinly veiled cry to his most fanatic supporters to engage in another January 6. Any platform that continues to amplify his voice is giving Trump aid and comfort in causing more harm.  

“No one is above the law, and that includes Donald Trump. He is a disgrace, those that protect him are willing accomplices, and he does not have the moral standing to hold public office ever again.”
