Amazing news from our friends at Food & Water Watch: Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a ban on fracking in New York State. This victory could not have happened without the amazing work of thousands of dedicated anti-fracking activists all over the country, including hundreds of MoveOn members.

As Sarah Alexander of Food & Water Watch said: This victory is because of the years of education, mobilization and advocacy work to build the political power for holding Governor Cuomo accountable to the people, not the oil and gas industry. New Yorkers Against Fracking, a coalition founded by Food & Water Watch–and the strong network of allies and grassroots activists are directly responsible for this victory.

In 2013, JPMorgan Chase agreed to a $13 billion settlement as restitution for their role in creating the Great Recession—and $613 million of the settlement was allocated for New York state to relieve distressed homeowners. When Governor Cuomo announced his intentions to use that money to pay for a major corporate tax cut instead, the Campaign For A Fair Settlement and the Home Defenders League started MoveOn Petitions to demand that he give the money to New Yorkers, not Wall Street. In February, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced his plans to divide the settlement funds among nonprofit housing groups throughout New York.

In June of 2013, the New York Legislature passed a bill that would allow local governments to enact stronger regulations for pet dealers, effectively cracking down on “puppy mills,” breeding facilities that prize profits over animal welfare. Allie Feldman of the organization NYCLASS started a MoveOn Petition asking Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign the bill into law. The petition gathered almost 9,000 signatures, and on January 10, Gov. Cuomo signed the legislation, helping to prevent the abuse and neglect of dogs in breeding facilities all over the state.

In July, the New York State Office of Mental Health announced plans to close two mental health facilities in the state’s Southern Tier—a move that would deny more than a million rural New Yorkers access to local mental health care. Morgan Willoughby started a MoveOn Petition to save the facilities and keep those vital services in the region. After thousands of MoveOn members signed the petition and called their state legislators, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state has reversed course. The plan has been modified to include keeping the Elmira Psychiatric Center open and expanding the Greater Binghamton Health Center with increased clinic capacity and telepsychiatry services.

All across the country, MoveOn members are standing together against fracking. And in Erie County, New York, public sentiment against fracking was so strong that the county chair introduced a bill to ban fracking on county-owned land. Sarah Alexander of the organization Food & Water Watch started a MoveOn Petition to the Erie County Legislature, asking them to support the bill. Thousands of Erie County residents spoke up to protect their air, water, and communities—and they won! Fracking and its toxic wastewater are now banned in the county—a major step forward in protecting New York and the rest of the country from the dangerous effects of fracking.

When budgetary concerns in the state of New York threatened funds for the proposed Catskill Mountain Rail Trail, MoveOn member Eve Fox started two MoveOn Petitions asking New York legislators to restore the funding. The petitions garnered nearly 1,500 signatures. Thanks to the large show of public support, the $2 million in funding for the rail trail was restored in New York’s 2013 budget, and plans to construct the trail are moving ahead at the county level.
